I noticed that at least one other person plays the game so I'm starting this thread.

The website

Go ahead and post your decks, strats, favorite cards, etc.

So disguise your toast and scrub your towns, let's play cards!

Gather Your Party had a neat review and a video analysis of it that I think are worth checking out.

I enjoy Hearthstone as a game to play occasionally, but the biggest problem with the game right now is that there are only a couple of really viable strategies, and they're all locked behind a grindwall so that most people are stuck making only one really good deck and having to grind quests with it for cards. Quests which are mostly class based, meaning if you don't get a quest after rerolling that is a class you have good cards for, tough luck, have fun spending the day in unranked.

Arena is the only thing keeping the game going IMHO due to not being able to just rely on the meta, every discussion I see about constructed always devolves into "where can I find the list of the best decks at" instead of "here is this hilarious deck I put together". Hopefully this is fixed in the future with a massive dump of new cards obtainable in boosters (30 new cards is a good number, but not enough to address the issue, and you have to pay to be allowed to play the quest to obtain them).

As a subnote, I don't think "Pay to win" is really a valid criticism you can leverage against a collectible card game in general: that's the nature of any card game, and trying to do it differently doesn't really work. Scrolls tried to have a no-transaction card model and it failed horribly because you ended up in a reverse situation where people who played the game occasionally and had disposable income just couldn't compete with the people who spent 10 hours a day grinding cards.

Maybe the starter decks in Hearthstone need a bit of a buff, but when everyone just copy-pastes decks it's hard to say if they're really just underpowered, or if it feels that way because everyones using the same deck from a limited pool of cards. Card games have to have some "bad" cards to allow skill to exist (bad is in quotes because sometimes use is found in a card that was apparently terrible), so just giving everyone the same perfect deck from the start would give no reason to obtain cards and just ruin the game.

--EDIT--
Having read the review, I don't really think it's a completely fair review (though I agree with a lot of the points) because a lot of the criticisms like "luck of the draw" and having a shop selling boosters are things that are just inherent to card games as a whole. It would be like if I criticized a casino for having gambling, it's pretty much what should be expected when you go into the game.

That's the problem with games that try to focus on competitive gaming but still want to have progression in the game itself, it just doesn't work. In a competitive game an older account with more playtime or cheddar invested should have no inherit advantage over a new account, else the game is going to feel unfair.

I don't think that's universally seen as a problem, else Pokemon wouldn't have such a popular competitive scene. It is a little unfair from time to time, but that isn't a huge problem unless it gets really bad.

That said, legendary cards are a bit imbalanced. I think they should be limited to one legendary per decl rather than the current one of *each kind* of legendary per deck.

I don't think legendaries are powerful enough that a limit that heavy needs to be set.

Oh, right, I uploaded a video yesterday going over the collectible cards..

I bodaciously did not sleep though making it, so I have not actually played the expansion yet. Had to go to work after then passed out as soon as I got home from the exhaustion of staying awake for 36-48 hours. Look forward to it tonight.

Didn't realize this thread already existed lol.

Anyways, I'm currently Rank 20 and stuck there because of all the Mages and Druids and shit in that rank, so I'm just gonna build a bunch of decks, play them in causal and what not and see what works.

Hearthstone came out for tablets recently, and I decided to try it out. It's actually really enjoyable. I'm not winning all that many matches but it's still really fun. I've been messing around with the basic decks for the most part. I just won a match with my custom Rogue, though.

I won three matches to get the mount for WoW and I'm probably never going to touch it again.

So I recently got into this game, I agree about the feeling of it being a grindfest to be able to afford any good cards/packs, but it's fun enough to play with a slightly-better-than-basic deck. I just probably won't touch the ranked mode until I get a legendary or two. I've got a Hunter deck going that's pretty solid without any, though.

Also the Arena is genius, really levels the playing field and is a way more fun way to grind for packs. It also points out how much I suck at deck-building. :pseudo:

TIL: Priest decks are OP and Ranked is relatively easy up until rank 20.
