Can we have a thread where we get to talk about, IMHO, the only interesting Mario games aside from 64 and the original Super Mario Bros? (Ok this is a controversial stance I admit but Nintendo and I haven't exactly been on the best terms of compatibility over the years)

I just need a place to personally air out how much it sucks that we're going to have to settle with Paper Mario Sticker Star for years before Nintendo will touch this franchise again. Sticker Star was terrible and has no replay value at all. It has none of the charm of the original Paper Mario, the comedy styling and intriguing mystery chapters of the Thousand Years Door and none of that epic apocalyptic flavor of Super Paper Mario. It just kind of plays like a pro forma Mario title with next to no storyline aside from (ZOMG Bowser kidnapped da PRIWNCESS again ((again(((again)))))

Shame Nintendo knows that those awesome RPGs aren't the real cheddar makers so we have to wait forever for the next game, and there's a chance that the next game is going to be an experimental failure like Sticker Star.

That said I definitely want to proclaim my love for the trio of Paper Mario games that preceded it. All of them have a humor and a gameplay I don't find in a lot of RPGs. Also the Mario characters in these Paper Mario games are given actual souls and dialogue in these games so you can identify with them. I know that's not something the Mario series is known for but I find it very hard to identify with characters who just go "itsa-me Mario" and "hi I'm Daisy"

We have a general Mario thread about three quarters down the page that may be better suited to house this topic rather than a completely different thread by itself.

That said, I'll respond anyway.

Sticker Star was Miyamoto's response to the bad rap that Super Paper Mario got. "You don't like variety? You don't like story that isn't spoonfed to you? You get a barebones turnbased with pointless gimmick undertones. You're welcome."

I think Sticker Star was a great game on its own merit, but with the rest of the series there for it to be compared to it is quite mediocre. If you put the past aside (and try hard to ignore World 3's screeching-halt progress), you might see what I mean.

Also, Mario and Luigi RPGs 1 through 4 say "Hi".

I did see that Mario thread but I feel its a double edged sword considering it covers the WHOLE Mario franchise. Like say everyone in the Mario thread is talking about Mario Kart and all of a sudden some guy comes in and he wants to talk about Mario Tennis, he basically ends up derailing the whole thread. Not wanting to do that to you guys, I figured a separate topic for the Mario RPGs was appropriate.

Having said that, I really agree with you that Sticker Star was Miyamito's punishment he inflicted on those who were unhappy with Super Paper Mario. I was plenty pop flyin' with Super Paper Mario, it was a successful experiment for the most part and had a compelling storyline (which is very rare in a Mario game) but because it wasn't the Thousand Years Door part two, everyone said it sucked.

Now I'm betting those people feel extra bad because they sabotaged the whole franchise and now its in limbo. I haven't heard of any Paper Mario news since the game was released. Such a shame the franchise has to be Nintendo's dark horse
