We have a general Mario thread about three quarters down the page that may be better suited to house this topic rather than a completely different thread by itself.
That said, I'll respond anyway.
Sticker Star was Miyamoto's response to the bad rap that Super Paper Mario got. "You don't like variety? You don't like story that isn't spoonfed to you? You get a barebones turnbased with pointless gimmick undertones. You're welcome."
I think Sticker Star was a great game on its own merit, but with the rest of the series there for it to be compared to it is quite mediocre. If you put the past aside (and try hard to ignore World 3's screeching-halt progress), you might see what I mean.
Also, Mario and Luigi RPGs 1 through 4 say "Hi".
I did see that Mario thread but I feel its a double edged sword considering it covers the WHOLE Mario franchise. Like say everyone in the Mario thread is talking about Mario Kart and all of a sudden some guy comes in and he wants to talk about Mario Tennis, he basically ends up derailing the whole thread. Not wanting to do that to you guys, I figured a separate topic for the Mario RPGs was appropriate.
Having said that, I really agree with you that Sticker Star was Miyamito's punishment he inflicted on those who were unhappy with Super Paper Mario. I was plenty pop flyin' with Super Paper Mario, it was a successful experiment for the most part and had a compelling storyline (which is very rare in a Mario game) but because it wasn't the Thousand Years Door part two, everyone said it sucked.
Now I'm betting those people feel extra bad because they sabotaged the whole franchise and now its in limbo. I haven't heard of any Paper Mario news since the game was released. Such a shame the franchise has to be Nintendo's dark horse
