I wouldn't say the kiddy reputation was really a problem Nintendo ever really had utside of online circles. The main issues that have plagued Nintendo are their lack of foresight on some decisions including when making consoles (The 3DS's second analog stick, sticking to cartridges for the N64, going to mini-discs for the Gamecube (which partially foiled pirating... for a short time)), and their general "if we build it, they will come" mentality when it comes to third party (though a lot of that is based on business practice where you leave the other companies to their work rather than breathing down their necks over what they're doing (until it involves their IP's at least)).
They're working on the latter a bit as far as offerring more of an olive branch and working alongside the third party companies, but the former is something that they need to kinda work on. All the same, hindsight is a bitch, and maybe if we were in their position, we'd make some of the same mistakes (or different and still kinda bad ones).
I'm interested in seeing how things play out. The Wii U has already shown promise of picking up with Pikmin out in Japan, and the first big blockbuster wave of games is coming in time for the holiday rush, so things can certainly turn around very quickly for them.
All the same, I am pretty disappointed in the fact that Nintendo struggled so much with HD graphics, which is what delayed a lot of games and gave us such a dry Spring. Especially when the last year of the Wii was so sparse because of development for the Wii U and the amount of time they had to work on getting familiar with the console, it seems like they gravely underestimated the step they were about to take and didn't worry about it until it became apparent that it was an issue.
They certainly don't need a misstep like that, and to fans, it's definitely annoying when the results look like the company's been slacking. But at any rate, the Wii U's pretty much got nowhere to go but up at this point.
