I've talked about it here before, but there was an old shareware roguelike RPG called Castle of the Winds that I used to spend tons of time on. Sadly it doesn't work on 64-bit.

Also I played a lot of shareware games in general, the ones that game on CDs of like 100 of em. There were usually a few gems in there.

Recently I've playing playing this NES game The Guardian Legend

It's about this big death star thing called the Naju which is full of aliens and hurtling towards earth. You play as the Guardian of Earth who is a chick that can transform into a spaceship.

The Guardian has to destroy the Naju by deactivating safety devices in the "Corridors" that stop the self destruct feature from working. So it's like a Death Star trench run but there's like 12 of them.

In human mode you roam the "Labyrinth" which is the surface of the Naju. It plays like a Zelda 1 esque adventure game, you run around killing big monsters for weapons and upgrades and look for clues on how to get into the Corridors. (Left for you by the now dead original inhabitants of the Naju after getting attacked by aliens)

As a sphess ship you fly through the Corridors in shmup mode and fight whatever giant lobster thing happens to be at the end.

It's cool how it combines two different genres, especially in a NES game. The weapons you find work the same in both play modes which is neato since it kinda blends the line between human and ship.

The japanese boxart is rad as all fuck http://i.imgur.com/cCKiL5N.jpg

Okay, let me tell y'all about LOST KINGDOMS, otherwise known as Rune!

Image
This Gamecube Game has you as a pretty pretty princess going around kicking booty and taking names in her search for her father, the king. She fights with magic cards that can summon monsters to fight for her. In this game you can summon something as simple as a skeleton, to something as legendary as the Blue Drake. Before combat you have to arrange of deck of monster cards you'll be using, and during combat you use whatever monster cards you need at that moment and discard any that you don't. For example, there will be a quick enemy dodgin' all over, and you have a Golem card, which is powerful but moves very slowly, so you discard it so you can skewer the enemy with a quick thrust from the Birdman's lance.

The first game has random battles that has you fighting monsters on a closed off arena, while the second game has more of a free roam battle system that lets you fight monsters on the dungeon map. Play both of them!

Please tell me someone here has heard of Cubivore. That game WAS my childhood.

Sin & Punishment: Star Successor is a little more well-known, but still relatively obscure.

Divergent Shift is a game some of you might've seen floating around the 3DS Eshop. It's a rather simple game, but it's fun and I really wish there were a sequel. And my god, did it have a good soundtrack.

It seems like everyone on the internet has heard of Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem, but barely anyone has played it, and NOBODY I meet outside teh interwebs has ever heard of it. There's currently a spiritual successor called Shadow of the Eternals in the works, but nobody seems willing to support it because Denis Dyack is in charge of it.

Hey, I just like tearing animals limb from limb and devouring them to gain their powers. It's like Kirby, except with gore, sex, and cubes.
It's really sad that it didn't get more attention. I mean, barely anyone bought it, but everyone I've talked to who has played it has loved it.
