Yep, that's a Bethesda game alright. Doesn't matter how many walls are between you and the enemy. If you're within a certain radius of them and make noise they will be alerted.

I see I'm not the only one that likes the Reinforced Leather Armor+Desperado Cowboy hat combo (although I prefer the Gecko-Backed variety of the armour, particularly with a mod that actually makes it look like gecko-skin)

They'll do that in Skyrim to, only instead of growling at the wall, they'll actually run around to the enemy. Better? Perhaps, but it awful annoying when you're trying to stealth kill, and Lydia shouts some battle yell and rushes into combat, especially since she'll follow that by getting in the way and making you hit HER instead of the enemy.

My favourite improvement to the AI in Skyrim is I can order Lydia to move when she won't get out of a door. Even more fun is shouting her out of the way. If I had a cap for every time Fawkes would let me out of my bedroom I'd own the Capital Wasteland by now.

This does happen but, in order to combat it you need to get a stealthy companion that won't run into battle like a mad man. Having Lydia as a follower is just asking for trouble if your running a sneaking character.
