In Age of Empires (and Empire Earth, for that matter) when you have civilians/workers gather wood from a forest, they gradually remove the forest itself. You cannot go through a forest, so gathering timber is a way of cutting a path through it. The Mongolians are the enemy team and they saw the Blue guys through the gap in the woods and attacked them. Civilians/workers in RTS generally have no sense of self-preservation. That's the joke.
