Christ being a thing in CT is perplexing.

Imo, if they really wanted to be more lore details, I think Z for Zeal would make a better fit, or M for Magic.

...Wait, AM...BM?

...Nevermind.

I was always fond of the fan theory that Chrono is a Jesus figure. The Game Theorist did a video about it but I don't know if I've seen it, the original theory can be found here: https://www.chronocompendium.com/Term/C ... ament.html

I'm a lot more skeptical of the theory than I used to be, particularly since Masato Kato insisted it wasn't true. It seems to largely be due to the English localization, which is almost more impressive in a meta-way. This JRPG about time travel suddenly appears to be filled with Biblical connections, simply due to the names of the characters and places! I think it's an interesting example of how our brains search for connections. It's also a lot of fun, in my opinion :)

I don't think the theorist mentioned the AD/BC thing though, ha.

BC was the era of Breakfast Croissants.

Well the actual answer is that year 1 in Chrono Trigger was the founding of the nation of Guardia. That's what the Millennial Fair is celebrating.

As for what AD and BC actually stand for, though, your guess is as good as mine. Anno Domini still works for AD, I guess. It's just the years of the reign of Guardia, rather than the reign of Christ. My headcanon is that BC is Before Crono, and that Crono had a later adventure where he went back in time and became the first king of Guardia after overthrowing some evil mystic warlord.

Well there goes my theory of Breakfast Cereal and After Dinner.

Actually BC (sorta) and AD can still fit when referring to the original source language. buzokuno(BuzoCuno) is Japanese for Tribal, before kingdoms and such. Minus Zeal most everything shown in the BC era in CT is tribal . Then AD fits per Locke's comment.

One other option is that it refers to time. Baai refers to time as Occasion, and Chitose means "millennium", but putting it together doesn't fit (google translate says it means "Please Wait") and we still need something to refer to "Before" the event. Before Chitose, or before the new Millennium would be a better option. From there, you have Ato de, which is Japanese for "Later On".

The DS re-translation solves this problem, by using the now standard BCE and CE (before common era, and common era) which gets rid of Jesus and solves the problem of it being tied specifically to the Gregorian calendar. Year 0 is now just arbitrary, as opposed to religiously decided.

Of course, in order to get that, you have to play the DS version.

But who needs a port when you already have the original version?
