Are the animals really named D-Dog and D-Horse?

I thought D-Dog was a vaguely clever riff on D-Day, the turning point of World War 2, where the D didn't stand for anything and was just for emphasis via alliteration. But D-Horse idn't even alliterative. Also the horse doesn't even have an eyepatch; I've just lost all respect for this game.

D-Dog stands for Diamond Dog. Presumably D-Horse stands for Diamond Horse. I haven't played the game myself so will have to wait until a certain let's player gets around to it, but I think it was noted somewhere else that the MSF has rebranded to the Diamond Dogs™. And they are just going with the theme. Also, it's Kojima so anything goes... It could be deep, it just simply could be weird.

It's one of the many references to David Bowie that Kojima put in Metal Gear.
