just to be a little pedantic, pretty sure they aren't hurt by the water, they just can't swim, so they explode to escape instead of drowning. so being drenched or taking a bath is fine. :idea:

I've managed to mostly avoid Splatoon, but I thought they were, like, squids that evolved into people

According to the game lore, Inklings (and Octolings as well) are comprised almost entirely of ink. Which is water-soluble, of course (ie. it breaks down rapidly when it comes into contact with water). Ergo being submerged in water makes it very hard for them to maintain their current form. It doesn't really kill them since whatever sentience they have always manages to escape (notice how Inklings/Octolings emit a little squid/octopus "ghost" when they "die"?). One of the main plot points of the game is that the various aquatic species were forced to evolve to live away from the seas and on land due to how polluted the oceans were by then.
