Simple answer, really. Mimics are from D&D, and they're shapeshifters that can take the shape of essentially any similarly-sized inanimate object. Changing the shape we make chests in wouldn't help.

That's...not a joke. that's just a really short-sighted, obvious observation.

It would've been smarter if you focused the joke about how nonsensical it is for a creature to "evolve" into a treasure chest lookalike.

Though this isn't what I was expecting. I thought that Katie would've gone for something about the rebuilding system, or the Fairy King, or about Xiao or Gordo.

Obviously the reason chests look like mimics is because mimics have a thriving carpentry business.
