I daily practice and study drawing for months from now. I think I have enough skills to make good and enjoyable comics. However, I would like to know how did KT become popular, maybe learning from her will help me.

I don't know Katie's story (I joined the fanbase back in 2012), but what general works is to just make the comic, promote yourself whenever the opportunity seems appropriate (E.G. Providing a link your site in your signature *hint, hint* *nudge, nudge*), and make friends (Both on and offline). Eventually, people will come your way, and some will even start promoting you. Though, note that it could take a span from weeks to years before anything significant happens.

If it at all helps, what brought me to AZ was looking through the links page over on DMFA.

Also, aside from the part asking about how AZ become a thing, I think this topic would be a bit appropriate to post in the General Shenanigans or Media Swap sections of the forum.

I think Katie started posting her art on DeviantArt before starting her own website. Not sure if that's where she started though.

Making the comic probably isn't the hard part, it's making it popular. I'd probably start by just posting your art wherever you can (forums, DA, etc), get constructive criticism, and keep working on whatever projects you want until you have a decent amount of material to start with and some people who'd be willing to read and share it.

We have an Art Thread if you want to try showing off your stuff to the AZ members here, we have some pretty cool art-minded people that could hopefully give you some good feedback. There's not a whole lot of us though so I'd definitely share it wherever you can, get your name out there.

One trick is to embrace Cerebus Syndrome(not to be confused with the hypothetical Cerberus Syndrome). Start on the silly side, noodling around with ideas… see what grabs you, and see what interests your friends or whoever reads it early on. Then, let continuity grow, characters develop, complexity and seriousness rise to whatever level you want to "cruise" at. If needed, do a reboot, clearing the old silliness out of continuity so you can start at cruising seriousness. But the looseness and experimentalism makes for great bootstrapping, and is useful for finding an audience and something you want to do for a while. Popularity won't come quick, but will build up over time if you do it right, so if you're ever going to get popular you'll have to be at it for a good long while.
