Wait, how can they go home if they are trapped inside the fortress?
I dunno. Portals I guess?
The back door. All red-colored countries specifically train all citizens to do things with very specific sets of directions. The main gate of a fort is the "to war!" door, and that door is recognized as the door one goes through when going to war.
The back door of a fortress is the civilian door. Until entering through this door, one is considered no more than an average peasant. Walking in through this door is equivalent to signing up to fight for HIS/HER MAJESTY and they are automatically assigned weapons and armor.
One of the rules that are lesser-known outside the Red Kingdoms that you must always go through doors single-file. No pushing, no shoving, and no cutsies. These rules are ingrained in their culture and are met with harsh punishment for failing to abide since early childhood (starting at age 4).
As such, the only option left for them is to go back. None of the army's equipment is to leave the fort except through the main gate in front. So they must put it all away in the armoury. And just as walking in through the back door puts you into royal service to fight for your country, walking back through it is seen as resigning your military position and entering a wartime retirement. At this point, the Red Kingdoms' militaries see these former soldiers permanently as civilians and will no longer allow them back into battle.
That about covers it.
Edit: HEY, I DID A THING. And I totally didn't take the idea from an above post!
