Wow is like a drug. Only you don't have the normal highs that come with drugs...
Fun fact: Playing WoW causes the same chemical reaction in your brain that cocaine does.
What, endorphine?
I thought all videogames did that to a degree.
YOU HAVE AWAKENED THE BIOLOGY STUDENT.
Okay so here we go: cocaine causes a buildup of excess dopamine by binding to and disabling the molecules that normally remove it. This causes a feeling of excitement and intense interest in things. Dopamine is not an endorphin, which are chemicals released in response to pain, orgasm, and danger. Endorphins calm you down, dull pain, and make you feel good. Dopamine, on the other hand, generally wakes you up, gets you excited, and makes you want to do things. It's linked to anticipation of rewards, curiosity, and the need to explore.
So we can see how video games, which present you with all kinds of rewards, and specific tasks you must complete to obtain them, cause a massive release of dopamine. Here you're faced with getting a sweet-booty set of armor in exchange for killing 20 dragons, dopamine is released and keeps you anticipating that reward for the duration of your lizard-murdering escapades. You're kept engaged and excited through what would otherwise be a dull and boring exercise. When you actually get the reward, you lose the dopamine and feel bored again. Time to move on to the next quest so you can feel that thrill. Cocaine does essentially the same thing, only there's no real reward involved; you're just excited about everything for no reason.
Q.E.D. WoW = non-chemical cocaine.
