It's funny; I've never actually assumed the items are held - bodaciously - within a Pokeball.

I've always gone on the theory that the Pokeball sprite is used because of graphical limitations.

I used to use rare candies all the time until I found out that they were not good for a cockfighting society's stats and such

Now I just use them to quickly level ones I need to level to trade on the GTS
