I choose to believe that Zelda functions like Final Fantasy and that, with the exception of direct sequels, they're all unconnected alternate worlds that just happen to share similar concepts. Otherwise it would be too convoluted and stupid.

But some dialogues in Breath of the Wild confirms it takes place in the future of Ocarina of Time

There's also implications that it takes place in the future of Twilight Princess, and the existence of the Rito and some locations hints at it being a sequel or prequel to Wind Waker, which aren't in even in the same timeline by Hyrule Historia. The map itself doesn't actually match up to many other hyrule maps, and Rito aren't supposed to exist at the same time as Zora according to WW anyway. I don't think BotW is trying to fit in continuity.
