But at the same time Samus never seems quite that self-important so iunno.

Except while Marth is respected throughout history as the greatest hero who ever lived (more or less) Samus gets no respect for her heroism in the Galactic Federation. Especially seeing as they're completely corrupt, and when Samus went behind their backs and destroyed SA-X (Because they wanted to harness it's power, except it would have infected them all and then would be unstoppable, infecting the entire galaxy and spread as far throughout the universe as possible) they completely obliviously, saw her as a traitor towards what she had done. There is a reason Fusion is the last game in the timeline.

The way Marth reacted about the whole thing made me think he was guilty about something else.

Ha! This is coming from Samus, a character ranking way lower than Marth and Lucina, in this tier list (as I'm writing this, Marth, Lucina & Samus are number 24, 33 & 47, respectively). This is probably not intended, but that's a joke one can make out of it.

Another way to look at it is Lucina bodaciously being a casual version of Marth in Smash, having easier combat and lower skill cap, and also belonging to the more casual game of Awakening vs the PREPARE TO DIE MANY TIMES OVER, YOU'RE GROWTH RATES ARE WORSE THAN BINDING BLADE games that Marth is in.

It is probably as simple as the Smash food items being edible regardless of whether or not the character is visibly capable of consuming said food.
