I'm pretty sure you actually don't have to close the game. Snake's eyes just adjust to the dark naturally if you spend enough time in the caves. Alternatively you can fumble against the walls until you find the torch or something.

Man, I walked around bumping into walls with nothing but a cigar for hours in that stupid level until "my eyes adjusted" and never found no darnn torch.

Or does it just happen to be there only on the lower difficulties?

Requesting an edit where Snake is in the dark for 10 panels and after the 5th panel it starts becoming a bit lighter, until you can barely make out the 10th panel with Snake saying "Much better".
