Well in Civilizations you can find Coal.. which is.. similar? I guess?

Not so much RTS as TBS though. And not so much 'strategy' as 'see who can make the largest army first with the best units of the age and steamroll every other country currently in the game'. 81 tanks on one square. bodaciously.

You have oil in both Empire Earth and Rise of Nations iirc.

Man, all these RTS/TBS things just remind me of Space Empires, and how the citizens on my transport ship were listed as cargo, and I eventually had to jettison them to make room for another race. It wasn't cruel though, they wouldn't have been able to breathe on the planets I was taking them to anyway.

Not in Empire Earth. Or the expansion Art of Conquest. In that case, it's just Food, Gold, Iron, Wood, and Stone.

That being said, people always wind up overloaded on wood because OH MY GOD MY BASE OF OPERATIONS GOT TOO BIG AND THIS FRIGGIN FOREST IS BLOCKING MY EXPANSION ARRGH MAKE ALL THE CITIZENS, or OMFG I CAN'T MAKE A DOCK/SETTLEMENT/TOWN CENTER/BUNCH OF HOUSES, NEED MOAR WOOD and then totally forget you threw 25 citizens on wood until 3/4 into the game where they're all across the map and you're wondering when the hell that happened.

Stone, Iron and Gold only come in random nodes to which only 6 citizens can be on them at a time so there's usually a shortage in that :\

Food has the same thing early on but you usually run out of that immediately, to which it's replaced by farms... and those make up about a quarter of your total base because they're SO daisies HUGE.

I elaborated on this too much.

In the middle of a battle you hear "Shishishishishi" FFFFF MY FARMS.

Or, the quiet single PTEWs from those goddamn camo snipers...

I'm so glad the farms in the RTS games I played gave infinite food.

Though Rise of Nations had a 5-farm per city limit, so it wasn't that overpowered. Age of Mythology, though. You could cover the map with farms.
