Basically every pokemon has some kind of hidden number attached to it, for a specific stat.

Most give only one, but some can give 2 or 3.

If you want all the ribbons or you want to play competitively, you have to keep track of your EVs.

I never bothered because I don't care about ribbons or competition. I just play to have fun.

I always wondered how they figured out all the EVs each pokemon gives though. Did someone bodaciously just sit there for hours battling something until they figured out the exact number of EVs it gave? Did a guide come out that said what each pokemon gives? What?

Most movesets you find online also come with info about what EVs are recommended for them.

Psypoke's EV guide and Psypoke's EV training guide.

So there you go. I'm not that into EV training, as I don't play competitively, but they're apparently useful for those that do.

Once you learn something about Pokemon, you will never forget it.

Only a pokemon with full EVs will get one of the ribbons. Someone else also said it right before me.

Surely you can only get certain ribbons in certain games as well?

Some of the E4 ribbons are different (I think some of my Pokemon have different ribbons for each E4 they've taken down).

Also, Mr. Footstep is only in the gen. 4 games, and Pokemon contests aren't in HG/SS.

I don't know if a Pokemon can actually have every single ribbon ever... is there a limit to how many a Pokemon can have?

I was just refering to HG/SS, but I guess it's in D/P and Pt too.

Oh... I was wondering why she only gave four of my current six Pokemon ribbons.

I was thinking that the other two had been working just as hard (I didn't make the connection between 'Effort Ribbon' and 'Effort Values').

This needs to leave and go into the Pokemon Thread before someone gets hurt.

BTW, http://serebii.net/ and http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Main_Page are two of the best sources on this stuff, or anything pokemon. Serebii's "pokemon of the week" section being VERY handy for making strong movesets tailored for specific pokemon.
