People work to pay for WoW.

People should enjoy their work to enjoy playing the game they pay for.

Well how many people don't enjoy their work but enjoy their play? A lot.

You can't claim it's a waste of time, that's not something you can prove or disprove. I could make the claim that this forum is unhealthy and addictive, destroying people's real lives. What is a real life, anyway? And why is it more important than a non-real life? And why does it have to be a benefit to society? It has a positive influence on the supposed "addicts'" lives in that it's entertaining.

Oh, sorry, it's not a waste of time?
Tell me why.

This forum is a waste of time, but not nearly as much a waste as WoW.

Don't pull all that existential bull. You're borderline straw man, here. I nevr said it had to benefit society. I'm saying that if it does benefit society, then it will have some form of validation for its existence. However, you've given me this validation: entertainment.

I still make the case that it is entertainment ill-gotten. There are better ways to entertain yourself than with WoW. Starting with a social life.

for the record: I've nothing against casual WoW-playing. I know plenty of people who play it casually - the fact that they're in public enough for me to get to know them is evidence enough they're not in over their heads.

How do you measure time wasted? What units are we using? My waste-ometre is at the shops, you see.

Again, how are you judging these things? Why is A better than B? And MMO's are in and of themselves, a social environment. If you think that's bullshit, define your terms more precisely.

Whoa.

This has become, liek, a srs conversation thread or something.

Yeah, I appreciate that some people are sensible WoW players, and they have other things going on in their lives which are positive.

I'm only wary of these MMORPG things because I got caught up in one for a time (Phantasy Star Online). At least that experience gave me insight into something I now know I want to avoid.

You also can't tell people how to live their lives - they need to make their own mistakes.

Also the definition of a 'full and varied life' will be different for every individual - which is as it should be. Someone shouldn't try to impose their own definition of a varied/productive life onto someone else.

I'm not going to force somebody to give up WoW, but I think I've got genuine reasons to dislike MMORPGs of its ilk.

Internets. Srs bsns.

Almost anything that falls under the "entertainment" category can be considered a waste of time.

On an off topic note, this thread needs to be locked. The argument is heating up and going nowhere fast and has completely left the topic of "Why do people complain about WoW" for "WoW is/isn't evil".

It's still fairly on-topic. The debate just started getting interesting really.

Or maybe you just don't like what you're hearing?

I suppose once you've heard the argument by one person you've heard it from all of them. Plus, things are getting a bit insulting. I'll be impressed if it cools down (the one I saw didn't).

If you think my opinion is worthless because you've already considered and dismissed the idea before, that's one thing. Just don't assume the large number of posts actually means anything (you'd be surprised how far it can climb with some quick posting).

I'm just saying you may not have a feel for just how off-topic threads in this forum can get before they get locked.

Or how they can get locked before they even get started.

Plus a lot of our proletariats are involved in the debating here - I don't think they're finished yet.

Time to get some popcorn and watch the show!

And there goes DnD picking on members with low posts again :colbert:

Don't get me wrong, I have a lot of respect for you DnD, but you can't make some statements based on the number of posts. I mean, you can't form an opinion about someone else taking in consideration the number of posts. They mean nothing, really. They are just for show, and aren't a reliable way of judging the member experience, opinion or anything about the member. If it were another person with a lot more posts who said that the thread should be locked, you would still disagree with him, but you wouldn't pick on him because of the number of posts. This goes for everyone here, not only DnD.

In another forum that I participate, the number of posts don't appear below the user's avatar, only in his profile, thus when an old member disagrees with a new member, he says his opinion without being disoriented about the other's number of posts. That helped the forum to be a lot more effective and direct.

And by the way, I didn't agree with him about the thread being locked, the discussion is a little harsh, but nothing serious, it is far from being locked yet.

Just saying, I visit this forum since last year, and I appreciate your conduct very much DnD. But I think that your way of analyzing new members needs a little change. Oh, and in my first phrase of the post, I was just kidding.
