Oh how much I hate that Daycare lady, I teach a pokemon a rare TM move and I come back later to find that they replaced it with something stupid like whirlpool :x

You shouldn't be using her at all unless you want to breed. They're slow, they wreck your moveset, and unless your Pokemon already have full EVs you're screwing up their leveling.

Yeah, I stopped after I realized that was happening. It's been a while since I played pokemon and I forgot (when I first got Platinum a few months ago that is). Also, the daycare screws up evolution? Didn't know that.

If I recall correctly, if you position a move correctly, it won't do that. Or you could just withdraw the Pokemon before it would gain a move level and not learn it.

Or use it only for levelling Pokemon that you don't want in your party but need to level for Pokedex completion. Trapinch is a good example for me. Level to 43, gain two levels outside of the daycare, and BAM it's a Flygon.

That's usually what I do when I want to breed them, take them out before they level up. And how do you position moves to keep the daycare from erasing it exactly? The bottom right slot?

By EVs, I'm pretty sure he meant Effort Values. As in those invisible points or whatever you have to keep track of yourself to make your pokemon the best it can be.

Ah, I didn't feel like asking what exactly he meant by EVs, so thanks for clearing that up! Also... a poke has a full EV once it has that little yellow smiley face on it's summary page, correct? Also.. do you just get EV points by keeping a poke in your party, battling with it constantly, etc? Sorry, I'm really clear on this subject. :(

It's common for many artists to draw naked women quite often. You have drawn a magikarp with legs.

...Can it learn Mega Kick?

Pocket-Rock, I wish I could link you to the website I learnt EVs from but the person closed it down ): it was the only one that actually taught me anything.
Here's another guide I found though that seems to be both accurate AND user-friendly!!! I want to complain about how those two qualities in conjunction should not be too much to ask but I have a tendency to go for the big words myself

also, a quick edit because I've decided without any my posts are crap. Thread so far has been BRILLIANT; must particularly mention Dr Evil, Beating Up Link, Katie Bought The Daycare and Old Lady Rolling In Dolla Billz edits because those were fantastic.

The little yellow smiley face means that it has had Poke-rus. The only way to know if you have full EVs without a cheating device is to go talk to the person who gives you the effort ribbon (Sunyshore in DPPt and Blackthorn in HGSS). If they give it to you that means that your pokemon has full EVs. However unless you know the exact mechanics behind EVs and are into competitive battling, I wouldn't even worry about them.

- EVs are basically experience points for your stats
- Every pokemon who gets normal experience from a KO gets EVs (this includes EXP Share experience)
- Depending on the pokemon that gets KO'ed, your pokemon will get EVs for a different stat. Some give EVs in multiple stats, some give more than 1 at a time. EVs are not divided among participants; all pokemon who get the experience will get the full amount.
- 4 EVs will give you 1 more point in their stat. You can get a maximum of 255 EVs in one stat, and no more than 510 EVs per pokemon.

Since most pokemon only give 1 EV each, it is recommended that you get the Power items from the Battle Frontier, which give the pokemon holding them 4 EVs in whatever stat the item specifies, in addition to whatever the pokemon you defeated gives you.

For example, you kill a Ratatta while holding a Power Bracer. You get 4 attack from the item, and 1 speed from the Ratatta.
