Metal Gear Solid games give you the option of non-lethally defeating boss characters, which is always much more difficult than the lethal option, but it doesn't ever actually impact the story, because the game always invents some reason for the boss to die anyway during a cutscene. (Sometimes the reason is just "and then Snake switched to a machine gun.")
Watchyou talkin' bout, Katie? They never "invent" a reason, they just die anyway, for no reason.
I remember when I went through MGS2 trying to no-kill my way through the game, the first time they *really* let you do. The Fatman battle sticks in my mind the most. It was so challenging and so frustrating, because the ONLY place you could hit him with a tranq dart was in his bald head. And after much struggle, I finally pull it off. Then the cutscene plays. And he starts bleeding from his chest. ANd I'm just sitting there screaming "WHAT? I shot that bastard in THE HEAD, with tranq darts!!" Okay, I get that he still dies even though I didn't kill him, but it kinda figured he would just slump over and die for no reason. It was just the most absurd thing ever that he was bleeding from his chest.
At least in MGS3 the bosses all just blew up,
