Or, you know, Cerberus is giving you a certain amount of that resource in proportion to the amount you discovered, as a finder's fee? Unless you think it takes several planets' worth of platinum to upgrade a shotgun.

Katie, you're installing a bureaucracy where there's no need. Katie, I fear you might have become a boring adult.

Well it wouldn't make a lot of sense to assume, Platinum deposit = Shotgun Upgrades.
Unless that deposit was directly to your bank account.

The last panel looks perfect for an "I never asked for this" edit. Just my 2 cents.

I always pictured the probe as a robot with scoopy jaws. You shoot it at the planet, its jaws are open, it hits dirt, it chomps, then it comes back home, robot mouth full o' minerals.

Then why doesn't Cerberus just give you the platinum to make the upgrades. In fact give all the raw materials needed to make upgrades, Shepard is saving the galaxy after all.

I haven't played the games, but isn't tree some racism against humans? If that's the case, the people in charge may under supply him/her on that fact alone, regardless if skill.

You forgot having to also worry about getting funding for the project, assuming you don't want to pay for it out of pocket, as well as designing the work site for minimal footprint while achieving an optimal retrieval/cost ratio. Plus, since Cerberus doesn't currently permit mining, you'll probably also have to submit some sort of plan for site reclamation since they likely won't want a terrible earth-scar left behind as well as plausible precautions for preventing uncontrolled runoff of whatever liquid chemicals you might be using for whatever reason. That'll also require a detailed climate analysis to determine average precipitation on top of things like anticipated impact on personnel and equipment, possible resource contamination, and personnel safety concerns.

Pray to whatever sci-fi gods there are that rabid environmentalists don't exist, particularly those who don't actually live on or associate with Cerberus but adamantly oppose all mining on principle or, worse, you specifically for your previous excavation projects.

Mine planning's a fun job, kids.

Cerberus is a bunch of human supremacists, they'd totally give Shepard what he/she needs.

Silly Mass Effect games. How can you possibly find a platinum deposit on a gas giant? They're made almost exclusively of gas, a state which platinum generally is not found in. Theoretically they might have a rocky core, but good luck reaching it when the atmospheric pressure from the above layers is enough that hydrogen condenses into the equivalent of a solid state. Even if you could make a probe that could withstand that kind of absurd pressure, getting it back out of that impossibly thick morass and into space again would easily require enough thrust to get from the Earth to the Moon in a few minutes.

There I go again, expecting realism in regards to astrophysics from video games. Kerbal Space Program has spoiled me, I guess.
