Okami is the reason I got so interested in doing research on the ancient Eastern world and its mythology 8===D
If not for that game, chances are I'd have based my interpretation on the culture just by Nintendo and the terrible show known as Naruto.
Was a huge educator.

If you're going to base your knowledge of Japanese culture on ANYTHING Naruto related, make sure it's the manga and not the anime!

Seriously though, yes, the culture and mythos of that country is so amazing that knowing only as much as you know from taking clips out of a few animes is a serious disservice. Both to yourself, and to all of us otaku/weeaboo out here.

*sigh* Seriously? She's saying that, if the game piqued at least SOMEBODY's interest in researching ancient culture/mythos and got enjoyment out of it, then it's a good thing... So, hopefully, Golden Sun did for someone with Roman mythology what Okami did for her with Japanese mythology.

EDIT: ... okay, the filter for "anime" is really obnoxious... but I am enthralled by it...

You realize that both of those are derogatory terms, right?

Calling someone a weeaboo is equivalent to suggesting they suffer from mental retardation.

Well Otaku is more like "nerd" in that some people see it as an insult where as others use it with pride. Weeaboo is ALWAYS an insult.

Otaku is a slur in Japan, almost to the extent of calling someone a sociopath or a pedophile, because of people like the Otaku murderer (where the murderer was an Otaku, not the victims). The only people who wear it with pride are westerners who don't understand its connotations.

Weeaboo at least is a derogatory term that some people take as a compliment because it shows they're "dedicated" rather than obsessive.

And daisies, this thread barely produced anything except discussions... we need more edits.

I couldn't care less whether they're derogatory or not. They're sufficient to get the point across, and there really aren't any other words out there that suffice. Taking it all in stride. :colbert:

Though, I'm calling bullshit on the "otaku murderer" thing, because I've never heard anything like that, and I doubt that a single murderer would ruin an entire term that's been around for at least a few decades. I will look into it, however.

You should have taken the 5 seconds to google it first, before calling out bullshit.

I don't mean bullshit on the murders happening, I mean bullshit about the term "otaku" becoming plague-bile because of that incident.

"The former Prime Minister of Japan Taro Aso also claimed himself to be an otaku, using this subculture to promote Japan in foreign affairs."
If "otaku" was really such a horrifying term, I don't think a Prime Minister would be referring to himself as such...

I don't know about all that but
Quote:
In Japan there has been some negativity towards otaku and otaku culture. Tsutomu Miyazaki became known as "The Otaku Murderer" in 1989. His bizarre murders fueled a moral panic against otaku.

Well, I'd put that in the same boat as how the particularly close-minded Christians view anybody associated with Magic: The Gathering, Dungeons & Dragons, or Pokemon. Yes, Pokemon. It's not that it's universally reviled to be associated with it, it's that some angry repressed people remember that awful thing that happened way back when with that one guy that said he was associated as such, and now everyone associated with it, to them, is just as horrible.

But then, we can say that about freaking everything in this world. Like how militant athiests bristle up every time a pope makes a new public speech, and political nutjobs grab their rifles every time somebody talks about Bush and his War On Terrorism.

Shut up and talk about the comic. Nobody cares about the word Otaku.

"Nerd" is only an insult if people use it incorrectly, or use it as though it were meant to be an insult. When someone labels themselves as a nerd because they own an iPad and frequently play angry birds, that's using it incorrectly.

The peaceful symbol of Buddhism became a symbol for hate because of one man.

Can't change what society now deems as bad.
