I'm sick of people going on about facial expressions. There's a lot of great body language going on here too, and that's really more important. Without gestures all you have are talking heads, and nobody likes talking heads.


Except maybe the ones in The Bots Master.


EDIT: Although it suddenly occurs to me that faces are primarily the topic in this thread. I still stand by my statement.

Well I for one think that Katie does a very good job of making Marth look effeminate in some frames. I always thought that the way she draws her persona was intentional in order to make her look more tomboyish.

Speaking from experience here, there are a few tricks you can use to make your characters appear more effeminate/masculine as you see fit.

For starters, the face is important, but not as important as shoulder width or hips. A female character should have shoulders that are slightly less wide or as wide as their hips, whereas a male character should have obviously broader shoulders that are wider than his hips.

Very handy for drawing androgynous characters as well.
