Just gonna say, Nintendo really needs to show Metroid some more love.
Metroid is comparatively way underhyped when looking at Fire Emblem.
Fire Emblem is a.slow, turn-based tactical RPG with permadeath, while Metroid is a skill-based platform shooter with aliens and explosions and stuff. You'd expect way more hype around the latter since the fun is handed to you from the moment you boot the game compared to Fire Emblem with its slow buildup of tutorials and the real fun mostly waiting until mid-to-late game.
Metroid just feels like it would have a more broad appeal, disregarding story.
As an avid player of both games, here's my theory.
Fire Emblem is slow only if you treat it slow. IN fact, it's supposed to be slow because the idea here is to think before you act. Fire Emblem pushes you to gamble situations where you think you could or cannot deal with an encounter. Drenched in the fact that choices matter. Permadeath is annoying, but it there to pose as a challenge. I mean, do you know how much easier the game would be if no one on your team could die? Fire emblem is also colorful and entertaining. Unlike most tactical rpgs, each encounter shows a unique fight animation sequence. If you don't like it, you can turn it off.
Metroid is fun because its more interactive and situational and for the Metroid: Prime series, more action-y. Let's talk about my favorite, Super Metroid. Since its previous games, they've really sped up the gameplay as you can now get about freely. I would'nt call this game skill based, but kind of like the "easy to learn, hard to master" kind of game. Doing stuff like wall jumping, shinesparking, bomb-climbing, and so on can be bit of a pain to get down, but its really fun to do once you get consistent with them.
I think it's underated because 1) straying away from platformers in later games, and 2) gloomy, post-apocalyptic-esque setting/world: For kids! I think the game could be more fun if it wasn't so uncomfortable to traverse through certain areas alongside with the awesome, but slightly unsettling soundtrack. Not to mention, no tutorial. As a kid, a few things like wall jumping and bomb-climbing were things I discovered by accident, and progressing through the plot took a lot of back-tracking.
So basically, if you like playing "team captain," bonding with your units, the rewarding feeling of everyone getting stronger, strategizing positions and resources, and cool animations/soundtrack. Play fire emblem. ESPECIALLY Fire emblem awakening.
If you like adventure and treasure/bounty hunting, the challenge of "getting around" while being on the edge or your seat, platformers, aliens and badass alien-bosses, and real-time strategy (like, the feeling of "how am I going to get through this with the little amount of health/resources I have"), play Metroid. Possibly Super Metroid. If you like the same thing, but prefer to be in first person, then play Metroid: Prime (or take it up a notch and play Prime 2: Echoes).
Personally, I like Fire Emblem more because I like the idea of togetherness and teamwork. In metroid, you're all alone (and not just in game. Samus has a sad back story. Which in a nutshell is "everyone who ever liked her and vice versa is dead").
