Ah, now it finally becomes clear. I'd heard a while ago from the Super Best Friendcast that Bravely Default takes a nosedive at some point, but I never knew exactly what that entailed. I decided not to get the game partially for that reason (the other reason being that my handheld backlog is imposing enough already, since I have trouble sitting down in my house to play handheld games), and now knowing exactly what that reason was, I'm still not entirely sure I made the right decision. It sounds like everything about the game is great besides that egregious padding.
It's true that the padding is a bit ridiculous . . . but the only part that is mandatory to progress through the game is repeating those four dungeons. All the extra fights along the way (every asterisk holder regains a blue exclamation mark on your map) are completely optional, sometimes repetitive, and sometimes new and different from before. The general trend is that the further into the game you get, the more bosses tend to group up and fight you together for various reasons, such as Heinkel and Barras entering the fray to assist Ominas, or Victoria, Atermia, and Kikyo having some sort of social get-together . . . which is a bit awkward to watch. On a side note, Kikyo is a lot more feminine than I initially thought.
Anyway, in my opinion, the most annoying part isn't how long it takes to go around and beat all the bosses; as somebody who reads Higurashi, I find it entertaining to see what is the same in each world and what is different. The dungeon doesn't bother me because you can just turn encounter rate down to 0%. The bosses defending each crystal aren't so bad because you can use them to test different team setups. No, the most annoying thing for me . . . it's the cutscene right after you Awaken a crystal. I hate how Airy offers an explanation because when you only have the option to press the X button, there's bodaciously nothing else to do. I also dislike how Airy interrrupts you every single time, saying the exact same thing. Almost everywhere else in the game, you can skip the text, but not here, for instructions you don't need and text you've already read more than a dozen times.
bodaciously = bodaciously?
