Remember, remember the fifth of November,
The gun powder treason and plot.
I know of no reason
why gun powder treason
Should ever be forgot.

I'm probably the only person in existence who has never read/heard/seen/or cared V for Vendetta or that Gunpowder Plot beyond some guy wanted to blow up Parliament.

I've never seen/read V for Vendetta, let's hear it for lazy terrorists. Te world would be a better place with more Guy Fawkes' -- also any excuse for a British holiday in which we burn effigies is okay by me! Now, who shall we burn?

Its just, I wonder. How many people really knew or cared about Guy Fawkes before that movie came out? I mean, seriously. I've never heard about it until then. Though, I'm still in the mindset I just don't care.

My roommates and I knew of Guy Fawkes Day-- also known as Bonfire Day-- because of crazy hippie friend and a crazy Europe-travelling aunt.
Another friend of mine knew because today is his birthday, so it was one of those "other things that happened on this day!" kind of things.
Lesse... according to Wikipedia there is an episode of Daria in which a number of personified holidays appear -- one of them being Guy Fawkes Night. There's also a reference to it in an episode of The Simpsons "With you [Sherri Bobbins] every day is Guy Fawkes Day"
Also there's are a number of literary pieces-- from Farenheit 451 to Good Omens-- that make references to Guy Fawkes.

Which means a lot of people knew/cared about Guy Fawkes-- in before it was cool, yo.
-- how much does V for Vendetta actually go into about Guy Fawkes? Because he wasn't exactly inspiring, except perhaps ironically. He fell asleep before he could blow parliment up, and the gun powder he tried to use was actually far to old to have worked anyway.

This is a very lengthy debate about one movie most people I've met hated. Oh, how this forum makes me laugh.

Huh, I thought I remembered hearing about him in 451...

Well, alrighty then. I can understand why Europeans could be excited, its their history, to an extent. (Then again, so was 300). But its just that everyone I've met, usually at school don't know anything beyond the movie and that annoyed me. I at least looked him up to see what all the fuss is about. Yeah, it was a pretty ballsy move of the guy, but the movie was just overrated. EFG is as close as I'm getting.

England was just jealous that they don't have a pyrotechnics-themed holiday in celebration of their nation's history.

Only seven months and twenty-nine days until Independence Day, guys!
