We used to do this at the last forum I frequented. It's a little complicated, but bear with me here.

Basically, everyone has a band that they think everyone else needs to listen to, but people rarely pick up music based on word of mouth. I've noticed that the "What Are You Listening To" topic doesn't seem to be spreading the word well enough, so I thought I'd try this here.

How it works is, before Sunday, send me a PM with the name of the band that you suggest everyone listen to this week. One band per person per week, please. I'll pick one of the bands (at random) and post them here. It's up to the rest of you, to find a way to listen to some of that band's works (I'm not going to ask about where you get your music, legal or otherwise). People comment on the band in this topic, and we all feel a little bit more musically enlightened. Hoo-rah.

Rules:

-It's okay to send the same band two weeks in a row if yours didn't get picked. Just send me another PM, because I'll only take into account ones that have been sent this week. It's pretty likely your band won't get picked, because if all goes according to plan, there will be a few suggestions to pick from. Please be patient.

-If you feel like I'm not doing a very fair job of picking, let me know, and I'll pass the torch on to someone else for a while. We all have biases, sue me. I won't get mad if you call me out, though.

-When you send the PM, try to include a link to where some of the band's music can be listened to on the internet, just in case some people can't get the music on their own. If you can't, though, I'm still just as likely to pick your music, so don't worry.

-When you're commenting on a band, it's okay to be critical of them, but be nice about it. If you say, "This band makes my ears bleed," that's not going to cut it. Try to be a little more deep in your opinions, especially if the band isn't your cup of tea.

-I know I've been saying the word 'band' the whole time, but feel free to suggest solo artists as well. Anything goes.

-If you're going to suggest a band, at least try to listen to bands suggested by others. It'll do you some good.

Okay, I think that's it. Give me your ideas in PM form, and I'll post the band of the week on Monday every week.

AN EDIT.... FROM THE FUTURE! (6/24/09)
This thread got necro'd, and now I'm trying to refine it so that is as un-retarded as possible. If anything in this edit contradicts something I said previously, then disregard the old, ring in the new.

First off, the day for a new band of the week is now Wednesday, not Monday. That's just because of the timing of when this thread was necro'd, and I didn't want to put off the first band choice for too long.

I hope people see this. Yeah, remember that bullshit about having to re-send me a band suggestion every week if your band doesn't get picked? It's bullshit. I realized it's sort of asking a lot of you guyses to make you send the same suggestion in week after week just because it wasn't picked. So, here's how it's going to work: you still can only suggest one band per week (because I know if I didn't have this rule, someone would send me a big list), but I'll keep track of all suggestions made (oh so conveniently stored and CAREFULLY ORGANIZED in my inbox). This means that from now on, if your band isn't chosen one week, you don't need to send me another PM suggesting the same band the next week. Make a suggestion, and don't worry about it; I'll get around to it eventually.

Finally, here's a list of Bands of the Week so far (just in case there's anyone out there who missed them and has a few minutes to burn):

Our Lady Peace, as suggested by our dude Spoony.

The Unicorns, as suggested by L Law--BEAR POLICE RAAAR

Blackalicious, as suggested by the forum's token half-black chick, Tall-Hatted Yanimae.

Die Toten Hosen, as suggested by our fair foreign friend Riodsey.

Pale Young Gentlemen, as suggested by Cafall, who may or may not be fair skinned, juvenile, and a polite fellow himself.

pop flyin' Listening.

Well that's what this little thing is for, isn't it!

Pro-method: Myspace + the Wikipedia game. You go to one band's myspace, then click off their friends space yayyy! :0

THE FASTEST WAY TO GET INDIE!

Bit of a delay, but here we are!

The band of the week is:

Our Lady Peace

As suggested by Spoony. From what I've gathered so far, (Which isn't much) it's a four member post-grunge band. This should be fun.

pop flyin' listening.

I just looked them up. Superman's Dead is a pretty cool song, but I couldn't really get into any of their other stuff.

Did nobody read the lyrics I already posted for these guys, or were you all unaware my username is a blatant rip-off of one of their song names? (Starseed, with a uncapitalized S and no Miss.)

By the by, Our Lady Peace isn't really... uhm.. not popular? I'm not sure what to call it. Maybe they're just popular up North. :| But I didn't recommend them for this because I thought you were looking for not well known bands.

Anyways, if you want the weird kind of edgy music most people don't get, their earlier CDs are better. Specifically Clumsy. I know that made all their emo tartlet fans go nuts, because it 'understood their rotting souls.'

If you're into more traditional music, their newer CDs are better.

Overall, I love their stuff. My fave band. :D I'd reccommend looking for songs from the CD Gravity, then the next 2 would be Clumsy and Spiritual Machines. Their second last CD was pretty good too though, with songs like Picture and Walking in Circles. The name of the CD escapes me right now though, apologies. X_x

They remind me a bit of Nirvana, except much slower and melodic.
