People are constantly telling me I should be doing something with my life. After highschool I took a year off and didn't really do anything, then I failed a year of uni in Electrical Engineering, and now I'm doing a course in Professional Writing. I'm not sure what I want to do, but I suppose I want to do something, rather than anything. So, a multi-part question: what is "something", why should I be doing it, and how does it start?

Something is a part of anything, and it should be done so your free time can be used somewhat efficiently?

Then again, we're always doing something anyways. Breathing for example.

I'd think you should try and figure out how to be a movie director myself. I don't know the first step for that either, but I think it'd be something you'd excel in.

Pick something you like most, and go for a job related to that.

I'll have to agree with Plasma here. What do you like to do? What was your favorite thing to do in school?

I'm not entirely fixed on doing just one thing for a career choice. Doing just only Art and animation will only bore me, despite how much I love it.
You don't have to settle for just one career. Having a multitude of things to do will be less stressful from singling out one thing to do. Makes you more well-rounded as well.

I want to go to a university to learn more than just Art. That's why I'm a bit iffy on going to an art college. For instance, before wanting to be an artist, I wanted to be a biologist or a vet. It was my childhood dream. lol
But when I developed an interest in Animation and what not, I still had the love for science. I can never give up neither, so I'm going to try and pursue both.

Start by figuring out what you love the most. Like what plasma said, and build a career around that. It can be two options, not just one. It has to be something you know you'll get up in the morning for. You should be doing it for your sake only, not because other people expect something from you. Most importantly, have fun with what you want. :]

Hang on, how are you supposed to have two careers? I mean sure, if they're two closely-related subjects you could (video game programming and webmaster, for example), but two rather different careers? The only way I can see that happening is either having two jobs or changing job now and again, both of which are ridiculous ideas.

Given the current economic environment, I would say to just settle for "job."

Depending on what you want to go into, what you want to study in college doesn't have to be related. I want to go to medical school and be a doctor, but I am studying astrophysics in college, two very different subjects. Go with what you want.

As for you Yanimae, having two different careers at the same time would be tough. You would want to examine which you like more/which is more practical a career and go for it. For example being a vet or a biologist is something that you can do as a career and then you can do art/animation in your spare time. If your art/animation gets really good you can switch to that. Look at the people who made Bioware, the founders of it were both doctors, then decided they want to make video games, they had prior knowledge in programming and they put their cheddar together and started a company. Also I am sure some famous authors out there started as one thing while writing on the side until their writing was able to support them and then 'retired' from their previous job to be a full time writer.

How long could we maintain? I wondered. How long until one of us starts raving and jabbering at this boy? What will he think then? This same lonely desert was the last known home of the Manson family; will he make that grim connection when my attorney starts screaming about bats and huge manta rays coming down on the car? If so, well, we'll just have to cut his head off and bury him somewhere, 'cause it goes without saying that we can't turn him loose. He'd report us at once to some kind of outback Nazi law enforcement agency and they'll run us down like dogs. Jesus, did I say that? Or just think it? Was I talking? Did they hear me?

My answer is another question: Are you pop flyin'?

If you are, "something" is unimportant.

If you're not, what'd make you pop flyin'?

If you don't know.... I don't know. Start a list of what makes you pop flyin'. Try some of it. If it doesn't work, hey, atleast you're trying "something".
