A lolicon who successfully persuaded an eleven-year-old girl to send him naked pictures of herself faces charges; unusually, he utilised a PlayStation 3 to perpetrate the crime.

The man (24) faces three felony charges, including online solicitation of a minor and promotion of child pornography. One of the charges carries a possible 99-year prison sentence.

His modus operandi is one with which police are familiar:

“He ‘groomed’ the child for quite a long time. He befriended her and pestered her for pictures, being a friend and pestering her at the same time.”

Police explain his use of the PS3:

“People don’t realize how the PlayStation is like a regular computer … [he] threw his old computer out because he didn’t need it.”

Sony declined to comment on the case.

The mass media keenly highlights the terrible dangers inherent in Internet chat. Online predators, it is said, will use any means to lure children into their wicked clutches, including all manner of Internet-capable devices, necessitating unceasing vigilance.

All the major Internet-capable consoles include a full suite of parental controls. Most sources agree that the vast majority of such offences occur offline, within the family.

I'm... actually surprised this hadn't happened sooner, although it probably has and this is just the first time police and the media have gotten involved.

At least Jack Thompson isn't around any more~

The sad part of the story (besides the story itself) is that the author chose to use the PS3 as the angle of the story. When you look at the basics of the story, he's using the internet as his means of preying upon children, not the PS3 itself. It shouldn't matter what device he used. I mean, look at the joker story. They simply say that "he pointed a loaded shotgun at them", not, "he pointed a loaded Remington 1300 at them." You just know that they're emphasizing the fact that he used a PS3 to attract attention and controversy, and it's sad that most people choose to cast aside their dignity and sense of professionalism in order to make a little bit of profit.

I agree, which is why I'm glad J.T. is not here because he would be all over this story. On the one hand, I can see how they'd emphasize the PS3 aspect because parents with young children might not realize that the internet on the PS3 is no different than the ones on their computer, but on the other... yeah. Media sensationalism.

*sigh* However you put it, it's all still quite disturbing.
Why does anybody want to ruin the blissful ignorance and innocence that comes with being a kid? :[

But yeah Def, I didn't even think of that until you wrote about it. You always look deeper into things :0

Would Jack Thompson cover this though? He believed that video games cause violence, not that the internet is for pedos.

Look, I realize that this guy is terrible and all, but I still can't see how an 11-year old was convinced to take naked pictures of herself and send them to someone she doesn't know. I honestly don't know how people fall for this.

He'd probably argue something like, "See?! Even the systems themselves are harming our children! WE MUST TAKE MEASURES TO STOP THE VIDEO GAME INDUSTRY FROM DEFILING OUR CHILDRENIsaywenuke'em."

While he was more against violence in video games, he did take cracks at sexual content and I seem to recall him saying that getting rid of video games as a whole would be the best solution; what better way to do that than to declare the system itself is faulty and unsafe?

It depends. Rarely is anything as straightforward as it seems. Now, it is always possible that she's just a moron, pure and simple. To quote Freud, "Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar." However, I sense that there is something more to this. To me, this seems like the girl has emotional problems. Whether it be an inferiority complex, a desire to be given attention, or simply an overwhelming need to be loved by another person. She could have come from a dysfunctional family for all I know, and this guy may have been here only solace. Now couple this with a child's natural desire to grasp onto an authoritative-yet-understanding figure to help them through uncertainty, no matter who it be, and you have a child that would be estranged without him. To me it sounds like she may have had a Stockholm syndrome-esque relationship with him. Bear in mind, though, that this is pure speculation.

What kind of legitimate reporter uses the word 'lolicon?' Also,

What the hell does this mean?

I think it's pretty obvious why this reporter won't make it past internet journalism.

Did you look at the website? Anime and lolicon all over the place. Here's a more legitimate source.

True, but... do people never consider that most eleven-year-olds are going through puberty? I think sexual curiosity combined with online anonymity are powerful factors as well. (Besides, not all eleven-year-olds are the embodiment of all that is pure and good.)

I think what the author of the article was trying to do was to make it look like Sony had something thing to do with it, when in reality the pedo could use any console to do something like that
