I am homeschooled.

My first job is to take apart and put back together this old thing.

What tools will I need?

My goal here is to learn how to put a computer together so I can build a Gaming PC.

Since that is a pre-built, it could have some tools required to take it apart that others wouldn't. Just open it up and see for yourself what tools are required. :colbert:

For the most part, the majority of parts in a computer don't require tools. Only like.. the motherboard and the power supply I think need a screwdriver, most everything else has stuff you can do with your hands because they just plug into the motherboard. The ways hard-drives are mounted differ though, so it might need some tool, maybe...?

Another tip is to photograph the whole thing while removing parts, Helps if you forget what goes where.

The subreddit Syobon linked is great. Alternatively, there is also /r/buildapcforme where you name your budget and what you're going to use the pc for and they will make you a list of parts. Though I'd recommend just learning it on your own. Also, /r/buildapcsales can help you save cheddar.

EDIT: The pc you linked isn't bad, but it could be better for the price. Instead of the 8 core AMD processor, you could get an i5 4460 or something and an R9 290 instead of the GTX 960. Also, the power supply they picked is kinda on the cheap side. You never want to cheap out on the power supply.

EDIT #2: Here's a build I just put together for you for ~$750. It could probably be a little better, because I'm a few months out of the loop on this stuff now and have barely looked at the 300 series AMD cards or Intel's Skylake series yet, but it's better than the build you linked. It's lacking an SSD, but you can get one for like 50 bucks more.

Granny Benson, YOU ARE AMAZING.

I know I'm sounding like a tech noob, but what's a SSD? I know a lot more about software than hardware. :psyduck:

EDIT: Did some research, HHD certainly sounds better than SSD for gaming.

No problem. I'd still recommend looking around for deals and stuff, but the build I linked is pretty solid.

And an SSD is basically storage that has no moving parts, therefore it's faster. A lot of people get a small one to go along with their hhd and they put their Operating System and their most played games on them so that they get quicker boot up times and quicker load times in games. HHD's are cheaper, but slower because they have moving parts. An SSD isn't really needed, it's just a nice thing to have.

An SSD is like an HDD, but way faster. Since they're so expensive, people usually get them in small sizes (around 256GB max, sometimes as low as 64) and run them alongside a larger HDD for general storage. So you'd install your operating system on the SSD to speed up the whole system, but you'd keep your large files on the HDD to save space.

Generally, you want ether an HDD or both. Using an SSD for all of your storage is prohibitively expensive. Some people disagree, but it's my opinion that if you're on a budget, the SSD is the first thing you should skip.

Edit: whoops dang, mean ol' missus Benson beat me to the punch
