We had an incident today that resulted in having to temporarily ban one of our members, and due to the nature of what occurred I wanted to make a thread about this to 1) make sure everyone is on the same page and 2) open the floor to any discussion should people not understand how and why the proletariats went about their decision.

To make sure everyone knows where this conversation is coming from, here's a quick rundown of what happened: Barabba submitted a picture Le Great Handsome Oppressor had posted on Tumblr to an art porn blog. The subject was brought onto the forum, and when Great Handsome Oppressor was clearly unhappy Barabba just laughed in his face. You can see the posts we deleted here and here.

People who use the internet will often develop a mentality of "if it's on the internet, it's fair game." On these forums, though? We expect people to maintain their moral compasses and respect one another, especially when it comes to another person's personal posts. You guys aren't stupid. While we have more than a twenty year age difference between our oldest and youngest members, we expect everyone to have some sense. We do not want to see people discussing someone's personal life without their consent, nor do we want to see people taking another member's personal pictures from this forum and posting them somewhere else without their permission.

The AZ moderators don't monitor what AZ members do off of the forum. The forum is the only place within our jurisdiction. Facebook? Tumblr? Skype? Anything that happens solely through those platforms doesn't affect the you on this forum unless it's brought here, and in this case it was.

Would sharing that picture have initially resulted in a ban? No, not since it would have been Barabba's first violation. It was the blatant disrespect of another person's wishes and the complete disregard for their feelings that lead to us skipping his first formal warning and giving him a straight-away ban.

Did Great Handsome Oppressor overreact? Yes, and he has acknowledged this. When one of us is personally involved in a matter we tend to shift the duty to someone else so that there is no personal bias involved. Great Handsome Oppressor waited until more of us were online and left the punishment decision for us to decide.

In summation: respect one another and don't be ignorant to someone else's concerns. In any situation on the forum, if someone is unhappy with what you did, listen to them. Don't be an asshole.

The floor is open. Anyone is free to post if they'd like to bring something up.

Wait, Barabba was serious?

I thought he was joking.

Sorry, Great Handsome Oppressor.

Can we restate that if you have a problem with another user, you should use private messaging? Because apparently my comment was viewed as butting in when the entire conversation was viewable by and open to the public, and that could've been avoided if the conversation was in private in the first place.

Regardless, I apologize if I offended Great Handsome Oppressor with my comment.

Generally when two members are having conflict on the forum in public view, it's best to stay out of it and notify a moderator about it (and if a moderator is involved, then find a different one). It can be hard to sit back and not do something when you want to diffuse a situation, but in past instances this has only made situations worse. You're not forbidden from jumping into these situations, just keep in mind the potential consequences should things go south.

PMing is always an option, but this wasn't a situation where PMing would have fixed anything.

(Also, your tact could use some work. c; )

Personally, I don't think Great Handsome Oppressor overreacted that much, although yes, he was not in the best position to pass out punishment for it. He did react harshly but it was not uncalled for.

It was blatant disrespect, Barabba does need to learn restraint based on this.

I would recommend keeping a close eye on things after the ban expires, not out of personal spite with Barabba but because in general, users some times decide to lash out for their ban.

If anything, I just feel sorry for Great Handsome Oppressor. This was a very insulting thing to do and shouldn't happen to anyone. Unless people are in the porn business, their faces should not end up on any porn material at all and having someone go ahead and do that without consent just goes to show that they do not want to take people's feelings into consideration.

I think we all need to be reminded that proletariats are still people. They try to maintain their professionalism, but that doesn't mean they don't still have valid feelings.

Barabba was always taking things way too far, but that he would actually go to this length? This is incredibly disgusting. A temporal ban feels too small of a punishment, especially as Barabba already did get a temp ban once.

I have no words, disgusting isn't even close to describing it. I'm entirely on Great Handsome Oppressor's side here, and not simply because he's a close friend of mine, any person in his situation has all the rights to be seriously rustled off about what happened. This is not okay in the slightest

You should've just perma-banned him. Nobody really likes him here anyway, that's his typical behavior. I'm saying this less as Great Handsome Oppressor's friend and more as a person who hates shit like this. Even though I don't come on this forum much anymore, it's plain disgusting that people get off so lightly for something like that.

That was definitely crossing the line.

Thanks AquaBat. I wasn't really offended, but it felt like more oil on the fire, which is why it got deleted :)

Holy shit, I'm so sorry that happened to you Great Handsome Oppressor. Has Barabba even apologized for it?

Barabba's behavior has concerned me ever since he joined, but this is more extreme than anything I would have expected.

I'm sorry that this happened to you Great Handsome Oppressor

I'm a bit worried on Great Handsome Oppressor's behalf because now that Barabba's banned, he might do something more out of spite.

Yes, but we can't let something like this go unpunished. If he does harass Great Handsome Oppressor outside the forums because he was banned, we would consider it within our rights to permanently ban him from the forum.

Ah, I am more than fully supportive of his ban. He can't just do whatever he wants to.

But if anything, I just hope people keep their eyes open in case they see anything related to Great Handsome Oppressor where it doesn't belong.

It's kinda sad that this is necessary. That should be common sense but apparently for some people it isn't.
