The International Telecommunication Union (TIU) is a UN agency that is going to gather government leaders from around the globe for the World Conference on International Telecommunications (WCIT). The decisions made at this conference could redefine how the Internet functions, and not in a good way.

http://www.whatistheitu.org/ wrote:
If some proposals at WCIT are approved, decisions about the internet would be made by a top-down, old-school government-centric agency behind closed doors. Some proposals allow for access to be cut off more easily, threaten privacy, legitimize monitoring and blocking online traffic. Others seek to impose new fees for accessing content, not to mention slowing down connection speeds. If the delicate balance of the internet is upset, it could have grave consequences for businesses and human rights.

Please check out http://www.whatistheitu.org/ to find out what you can do to keep the Internet free. And don't forget to share this info with as many people as possible.

It isn't that big of a deal. Its reviewing a treaty from the 80s, nothing drastic will change.

Honestly, even if they're not planning on any funny business, making some noise is always good. Just to let them know that we are watching them.

You never know what could happen; informing people about this conference is important because I'm pretty sure that there are people out there who think that the shelving of SOPA and PIPA were the end of governments wanting to regulate the Internet. Complacency is dangerous.

The New York Times posted an article back in May that talks about the upcoming ITU meeting. It's written by Vinton Cerf, one of the "fathers of the Internet", and is definitely worth reading.

You'd need to set guidelines that at least 98 countries would agree on, which I find rather difficult. This meeting is happening, and they will settle on some form of international internet law or something.

What is it you'd like to see in the bill?

If they decide that the internet should be open and free to the people, then the other 96 would have to agree, and set their laws accordingly.

I want to see the conference acknowledge that attempting to regulate the Internet like it's some other form of media will not make the world a better place, but in fact make it worse.

Only one week left until the conference.

1 day and about 20 hours left until the conference. Here's some more news:

BBC reports that the European Parliament is against the ITU's conference.

Google has a petition that people can sign.

Techdirt discusses the ridiculousness of the ITU's definition of "Transparency".

The conference is going on right now. The best we can do right now is hope that all of the people who signed petitions on Google and such get through to the people at the conference.
