I just received my new laptop and from the moment I started it the monitor has had problems.
This guy seems to be describing the same problem.
None of the other monitors in the house have ever had that kind of problem, and my father's laptop works just fine on the very same plug.
It's brand new, it was delivered one hour ago.
What can I do?

edit: Now it only seems to happen when I'm using Modern UI. In desktop mode the display is perfect.
edit2: and now it's gone. Should I be worried about something?

the ribbon cable may be faulty for the display, or it's sitting near a magnetic object (Hard drive or speakers)

Thanks.
I called the support and the guy said it could be what you said. A technician will come see it next Wednesday and hopefully fix it.

The touchpad on my roommate's laptop seems to be dead on one side and would randomly register two fingers before we disabled pich-zoom. It seems to me like a hardware issue, but I wanna check if anyone knows of any stupid setting on windows 8 that dicks over mouse controls?

For some reason, I've never been able to get Imgur to work. Granted, I don't have an account, but no matter what kind of image I try and upload, it just says it's pending and never does anything. What the heck? Any ideas, guys?

Edit: Oh, my bad, I guess I didn't upload the "right way" or something.

Newsflash! Really great graphics card on sale now! From $94 to $66(with a mail in rebate).

If you are building a "cost-efficient" PC that cost $400 total instead of $400 each part, this is a great addition to your build!

The R7 and R9 series are coming out soon so current gen AMD cards are gonna go down in price, yeah.
Funny that it comes with 2GB VRAM though, considering that it'll run out of juice before using even 1GB.

Sick of this problem. When I turn on my computer, sometimes my main monitor (VGA running through a DVI port) either blinks on and off or it shows a flickering image shifted to the left with a green line running down the empty black space on the right.
When the monitor's blinking on and off, I can't shut it totally off by hitting the switch; it's totally unresponsive.
In both cases, if I force a reset by turning on my second monitor (a TV running through HDMI, so the computer can tell whether or not it's on) then after a few tries it sorts itself out. Unplugging my standard monitor also usually fixes it.

Am I right to diagnose this as my monitor being on its way out, or should I take a look at my graphics card?

I would try the monitor on a different computer first, or a different monitor on your card, or both if you can. that way you can definitively tell which one is messing up.

Last night when I got back to my room, my roommate was asleep and my screen was turned off, so I shut down my computer just by hitting Windows > Right Arrow Key > Enter.

I didn't turn the screen on at all, so I don't know the specifics, but I know Chrome would have shut down incorrectly. What's weird is that when I turned it on today, all my extensions were gone. Bookmarks and logins are still here, but none of my addons.

Any ideas what happened? It'll be simple to fix, just reinstall shit, but it's still weird.

EDIT: Double weird. I went to reinstall them and all my settings were still there. I don't think the extensions even downloaded; seems like they just started showing up again.

So with my new job on the horizon, I've been thinking of saving up cheddar to buy a new laptop. I know absolutely nothing about building a PC, and I'm not sure I particularly want to. Instead, I have been looking over Sony's site so I can look at purchasing one of their Vaios and maybe customizing one of my own so I can keep the features I need, and leave out the extraneous software.
The current laptop I use is a vaio and it has served me well with few problems, but it is showing its age. I don't do much special work on my computer, I mostly use it for internet, video and homework, though being able to play some games would be nice. Is there something anyone would suggest for a person looking to customize a laptop?

If you want a laptop, don't worry about the advantages of building vs buying. For all practical purposes, laptops can't be built.

Advice depends on how little games matter to you, really. Nowadays most every processor and/or motherboard has built in 1080p video decoding somewhere, so you'll almost definitely be set for video. Browsing the internet doesn't necessarily take a lot of power, but multimedia-heavy sites like tumblr, facebook, or pages with a lot of ads might chug a bit if you don't have high enough specs.

Checking out the Vaio website, I'm only seeing 3rd-gen Intel processors, which is pretty good. You could find things a bit newer elsewhere, but unless you're playing games you probably won't see the difference.
Most of the Vaio laptops have 4 GB of RAM, which isn't bad either, but might be a problem if you liked to browse a lot of tabs at once or run several programs in the background.

These laptops will do everything you want them to, I'm mostly pointing out the specifications because of the price. You could probably find similar or better performance cheaper elsewhere. If you want a Vaio because of your last one, though, then you should be good with anything that's got an i5 processor.

Just asking, but do you really need a laptop? If you only use it the house it doesn't seem like you would need the mobility. Even if you buy a pre-built desktop that would be much better value than a laptop.

Sometimes when browser settings are corrupted (or when the browser thinks they are), they'll be reset. That would include extensions, but not cookies and personal data, hence you kept your passwords and stuff. Is syncing enabled? That would explain why your extensions came back (your local installation flushed them but the sync servers pushed them back to you). Though extension settings can't be synced, so if they too are the way they were before, it would mean your browser had some sort of temporary glitch.

Yeah, I had an extension with a list of words to block on tumblr and all the words were back when I "reinstalled" the extension.

Though the browser did forget a few settings like reopening the old session when I opened chrome, so it seems like the settings got corrupted.
Is there any chance my extension settings specifically would have been preserved by syncing?
