Humanity landed a fucking space probe onto a bloody comet! PROGRESS!

There are indications of issues with the landing, but we managed to send a probe millions of kilometres into space and hit a tiny rock that has barely any gravity. This is a great achievement for humanity no matter how you look at it!

I saw a gif of the trajectory it took but it didn't make it clear, did they have to plan out the whole trajectory of both the probe and comet 10 years ahead or was it aided in any way?

If they didn't make it where the space probe flew in front of the comet, essentially making it more accurate that the comet landed on the space probe, I don't consider it a success.

a large object does not land on a smaller object at high speeds, it "crushes" or "obliterates" the smaller object.

so no not really feasible that the comet lands on the probe unless the probe is larger than the comet

Today I learned that what I was always thought about Forces in physics is kind of wrong. The more you learn about it, the more incomprehensible the universe becomes.

Gotta say, I agree with the first half of that thread's title. But applied to the rest of XKCD.

It isn't always funny, but it's usually insightful.

I'm already lost after the first post.

I guess I'm just a simple country bumpkin what don't understand no fancy science words.

It's always come off as extremely pretentious to me.

New Horizons took color pictures of Pluto and Charon.

Doesn't look like much, but the probe was over 65 MILLION miles away, and is expected to be within 6,200 miles (one-thousandth of that distance) in three months.
