Just so I understand the distinction, maybe it's just a specific series thing I'm not aware of(?), but why are Mega Man and Mega Man X considered to be not the same series?

EDIT: Also, is it okay if a character's skin color is strange or inhuman as long as their hair isn't?
EDIT AGAIN: Wait okay I think I just answered my own question because Jynx was considered kosher, and she has purple skin.

Ah, okay. I thought it might be something like that but I'm not familiar with the franchise so wasn't sure if it was "X" as in a second series reboot or spinoff, or "X" like "ten" from the same series.

Yeah, the Mega Man X series is in the same universe as the Mega Man series but it's a separate series with separate numbered entries that share almost no characters.
