Anyone know a good, safe way to install a video card? I'm not worried about ruining it, at least not primarily. I just want to be able to take a brand new computer and a brand new GPU somewhere that'll take responsibility if the rig blows up, because my mom is buying me a computer for college and she's worried about installing new hardware.

I looked into Geek Squad, (I know enough about computers to turn down their sales pitches, and it's not like their default 'wipe the computer' fallback will matter if it's brand new) but apparently there have been a few issues with them stealing components? Not risking that.

Does anyone know if mom and pop computer stores tend to ensure against their mistakes?

Steps to Install a Video Card

1. Take card and remove from packaging.
2. Open computer.
3. Put video card in the only slot that fits it.
4. Boot up computer and go to Nvidia or AMD website, whichever made your video card, and download the latest driver.
5. Video card is now installed.

Neither of you seem to have read my post.

I've installed video cards before.

Your post said nothing about your prior experience, it just asked if anyone knows of a safe way to install a video card.

Prior experience wasn't relevant; I stated it was for my mother's confidence that I'd prefer to have a computer shop liable if possible.

Also your advice.... isn't that great. Some PCs (the one I'm getting being a prime example) have multiple PCIe x16 slots; you also neglected to mention that most modern cards require extra power cables. That second one is kind of crucial.

You should make your guide useful before sarcastically posting it.

If it wasn't relevant then why did you feel the need to tell me? You can pick any of the PCI slots it fits into, it won't make a difference. Also I didn't figure I needed to add such an obvious step to the equation because honestly if someone can't figure out why there's a power connection on their card they have no business touching it or anything in the case anyway.

And your mom does realize that a computer shop is going to charge $100 or more to install the card right?

I mentioned it because you and Malum implicitly made mention of it?
It is isnt relevant to the situation, but it became relevant when you two brought it up. Don't pretend you didn't.

The power plugs on graphics cards are boxy little grids. Going by the experience level you'd clearly assumed of me, you wouldn't expect me to notice it, let alone identify it. That's also weird justification for leaving it out regardless; are you saying taking it out of the case wasn't obvious? Just stop the justification and admit you were being inappropriately sardonic.

Yes.

I'm not going to admit to something you're falsely perceiving. You have a habit of seeing things that aren't actually there.

You asked for a safe way to install a video card. I told you in a literal manner, not sarcastically. You then took offense and claimed that you meant something completely different.

Quote:
Anyone know a good, safe way to install a video card?

That is exactly what you said. There is no other way to interpret this sentence except as coming from someone who does not understand how to install a video card. Quit with your persecution complex.

You can interpret that in a lot of ways if you don't completely ignore the context. Allow me to demonstrate one such way:

Good and safe as in minimal risk? As in someone else liable, among other possible interpretations? As in "the rest of this post makes it pretty clear I'm talking about about getting it installed by somebody else" ????????

I did indeed claim I meant 'something completely different' from what you assumed, on account of meaning 'something completely different' from what you assumed. This 'something completely different' is made pretty clear by my post.

You're not saying anything about the technical side anymore and you're definitely not helping with it, so I reiterate my question more clearly: are there any computer stores that, or do they all tend to, install components and assume responsibility if anything goes wrong?

No more room for misinterpretation.

OK what the fuck is going on here? I just bought an album off of Bandcamp and when I drag it into iTunes it works fine, but when I drag it into my iPhone proper it tells me it can't detect the device for some reason. I know this is bullshit for 2 reasons: first of all I know the cable connecting the 4S to the computer is plugged in proper, and second of all I know that songs can go from iTunes to the phone because I just bought 2 songs off of the online store.

This is really fucking frustrating, any help appreciated.

Your main problem is you're using iTunes, which is known to be a buggy program.

I was seriously under the impression that Apple made their media players exclusive to iTunes, thanks for the help.
