Penny Arcade and numerous other comics sell merchandise with copyrighted characters in them without issue.

I would be wary of using the "Someone else has done it so it must be okay!" argument as well.

I fully support Katie and her journey into the world of published works but I advise caution - and perhaps legal counsel.

And quite possibly mental counsel.

I would also be concerned about Tax implications... Pretty sure it sets off some alarms in the IRS or somewhere when a college kid suddenly has $30k+ show up in their bank account...

I don't know anything about copyright but I imagine that if its okay to have a website that makes a small amount of cheddar with the comics, its okay to have a book that does the same...?
