Rifles are my favorite because i have good accuracy with them at long range, scoped or not. i get head shots(equivalent to) easily at 50 yards. Shooting is a hobby of mine.
I took a marksmanship course last year given my the national marksman team. Yes, the people who trained the US forces to get headshots because they were wasting too much ammo. I can hit a head sized target at 200 Meters with iron sights now. and firing while standing, which is much harder than it looks.

a .22 at over a hundred yards can't penetrate a skull. you'd have to shoot through the eye, and good luck with that. but a .22 is a good small game rifle, great when you need food on the run and cheap ammo. of course at point blank a .22 can kill nearly anything if it's a headshot.
The best gun for zombies would be a semiauto assault rifle (.223 or .556 or whatever the AK's are), perhaps with a silencer.
