I think you meant to say that it started to suck halfway through Johto.

Because everything after Whitney was stupid bullshit with occasional "specials" sprinkled through in hopes to keep things interesting.

Advanced was kinda dumb mainly because they didn't know what to do with contests and how to make May not annoying and petty. Near the end of Hoenn, things finally picked up and Battle Frontier reached the pinnacle of what Pokemon could be.

Then DP came and tried to be more story focused, but it was so dragged out with mini-arcs and bullshit that it was basically Gen 2.0. Two of the more popular moments of the Sinnoh arc were the Hearthome tournament and the Sinnoh league, which leads to the problems with Unova.

BW was basically Tournament Arcs the anime, and while some were interesting, most of the time was dedicated to rivalries that never really panned out. the fact that some tournaments lasted longer in the story than the actual Unova league, the main focus of the arc (and any other arc), is frustrating. However, a lot of Unova was gimped by the earthquakes so it's hard to judge how well off it would be with Plasma and Rocket being dumped into mini-arcs.

XY looks promising with a kind of ongoing mystery that begins from the beginning instead of halfway through the series, but that's whether the momentum can carry it anywhere. The GS ball was going to do the same in Johto, and Team Rocket was gearing up for big things in Unova, so who knows if this will turn out to be disappointing.

Also, Misty was probably the best personality of the girls, but ultimately pretty much all of them have been inconsequential. It might be nice if Ash at least had a Pokemon to remember them by. He kinda has Buizel, but Buizel is more his Pokemon than Dawn's anyways.

And whoops, long post about anime.
