According to source, the red stuff is a pile of ammonium dichromate, "Vesuvian fire", usually used for tabletop volcano displays. Underneath it is mercury thiocyanate, which was used for "Pharaoh's serpent" displays where the product of the reaction was a winding, coiling, snake-like thing. The vapors produced by burning the mercury thiocyanate are incredibly toxic (and it looks like this was done underneath a chem lab hood).

So someone took a bunch of screenshots of a 2800-player battle in EVE online and those look pretty awesome.

Maybe not that impressive, until you realise the ships you can actually see in this picture are about as big as Manhattan and are surrounded by swarms of smaller ships.
