This is really stupid, but at the same time... I feel that for girls, there is STILL an inordinate focus on playtime being focused on things like playing housewife, daydreaming about meeting their prince, and looking their best so that others will think better of them.

Granted, this kind of play shouldn't necessarily be stopped just because it fits gender roles, but the fact that it's passively enforced through social structures and hollywood stereotypes just kinda skeeves me out sometimes. Boys seem largely free to do as they please, and girls who decide to do "boy things" aren't as socially unacceptable as they used to be, but there seems to be a lot of girls out there that don't break the mold on this just because they're expected by their family/peers/themselves to follow the trend.

Man, I had Barbies and a dollhouse as a kid and don't give half a shit about anything "girly". I always thought that the toys aimed at boys were so much cooler. I'd rather have played with dinosaurs than played house (in fact, I can't remember ever having done that).

My point is I think fairly strict gender roles found in toy stores suck, if that makes sense.

Slightly related: when I first unpacked my dollhouse, there were two of the dad dolls and no mom. Looking back now, I find this hilarious.

me and my dude friends liked to play house when we were kids. It's not really a gender defined activity. Kids just want to emulate adults. I had about as much fun with barbie's kitchen set as I did with bleedin' Action man
