There's no real objective way to directly compare writing, save for grammar and spelling.

I meant compare the writing to whatever sources they cite, for accuracy. Should've made that clearer.

Also Mander a degree is proof you managed to not flunk out of college. It's not proof of skill. And I said skill, not talent.

That is a good way to gauge the reliability of a journalist, but it would require a lot of time and resources to sufficiently check for that with a large enough sample size, especially for a larger number of journalists.

Which is generally a consequence of positive attributes like responsibility, dedication, intelligence and knowledge of the field. That is, if the involved college isn't a shithole.

I agree that a Journalism-related degree shouldn't be absolutely required to work in journalism, but its just something that helps. It says "Hey I wanted to work in journalism so I decided to take some classes to get this diploma", at the very least. At most it means you have a very prepared, intelligent, and skilled journalist.

It's not the only thing that goes into good journalism, which why Reuters has that 100-point checklist of different stuff that can make the source reliable.

I do wonder if some items on the checklist have more weight, like economic ties to publishers. I find it hard to believe that you could call that unbiased even if they had some other things going for them.

Well, economic ties are a bit complicated since most big news holders could cover news about any company and/or person and they have a ton of shareholders and advertisers and such. It's probably not a binary check but rather a separate score on some scale. Which almost all gaming journalism sites would fail spectacularly since they're completely dependent on publishers to even be able to review a game since they need review copies.

Video games as a genre are still very new in the grand scheme of things. Back 20, maybe even 10 years ago, if you wanted to write about video games, all you had to do was guarantee that you had the resources to publish it. It's never been a very professional niche because it hasn't had the time to develop. Majority of video game journalists wanted the job because they wanted to be paid to play video games (or paid to pretend to) and the talent pool has never really progressed. Current debates about feminism is probably the most exciting and extra-relative stuff that games journalism has ever experienced, but apart from that, there's nothing to motivate an entrepreneurial journalist to involve themselves in video games.

How about the
videogames themselves??? There being more talk about social issues than videogames is another big problem in video game journalism.

The film industry went through the same rapid evolution but I'm pretty sure it was never this blatantly biased, misinformed at most maybe.

Video games aren't interesting to the rest of the world. If you, as a talented journalist with respected credentials want to make a name for yourself, then there is just so little option for impression in video games. Also, it's just become a culture within the video games industry to pay reviewers. It's simply the industry standard.
