Well it would require rooting and external cables to be able to use SD cards anyway. If she plans on using it as a workstation though, it might be best to go for Nexus 10 though due to its size and specs. I use my 7 as a toy mostly.

Can anyone more knowledgeable than I tell me if there are any major differences between this and my current (dead) motherboard?

I know that the AM3+ can take anything the AM3 can, so my CPU should be good with this board.
Does the RAM check out?
Anything else I should be wary of?

Also, a different question: with a board like that, what happens if I use two graphics cards that aren't identical? Will there be any performance boost or whatever, or would I have to have identical cards for that?
This never came up because my current board only has one PCIe x16 slot, but if I wind up with two...

HDMI is the same as DVI, with a different shaped plug.

But
HDMI has audio
DVI doesn't
Plus there is a pin number difference

Dvi can also carry two signals, accounting for the pin difference.

E: oh also HDMI can carry Internet, and apparently can tell whether or not the device it's plugged into is powered on.

Hey guys.
I want to make a desktop that is cheap yet decent.
Will an Intel Pentium G860 at 3.0 GHz suffice? Or should I go ten dollars cheaper for an Intel Pentium G630 at 2.7 GHz?

Depends on what you plan to do with it. Gaming? You're not going to want to go much lower than $100 for a processor, and make sure it's a quad-core or better.
[url=http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=AMD+Phenom+II+X4+965&id=370]This is just about the best CPU you'll get without crossing $100.
A G860 is only a bit worse than what I've got, but my system is starting to show its age.
Unless you've got a budget of $200 (in which case you really should save up much more before buying a computer if you want one worth keeping) you should try to hit $100 on CPU, minimum 4 gigabytes RAM, and a decent video card (here is a pretty good video card for only $100.)

I know it can be tempting to go for a cheaper PC, but it's really not worth upgrading at all if it's underpowered; you're just going to wind up having to upgrade again right out of the gate.

If you're not going for gaming, then yeah a G860 would be fine, but you should shop around a bit because you can find some CPUs much faster than that for around the same price. The benchmarks sites I've linked to are excellent resources for that.

HDMI cable if there is a port on the computer, or a HDMI-DVI converter/cable

As long as the TV is 5 years old or less, it should have an HDMI port. If it only has analog input, things get more complicated.

I used to have an adapter box, but it went the wrong way for what she's trying to do. Took RCA jacks and converted their signals to VGA. So yeah, like Mete said, it comes down to how old the TV is.

When building a gaming computer, there are two things to go full-hog on. CPU and GPU. Everything else can be upgraded later for minimal cost.

Don't skimp out on the PSU though. A faulty cheap one can fry your entire system.

on PSUs, always go with single rail. multi-rails are cheap and unreliable
