I dunno about sage advice. Also I work in a supermarket.
I tell ya what though, some of them talk way too much. I get a lot of old folk shopping and they always tell me about the old days in their home lands. I'm not very good at ending a conversation politely. So sometimes I'm stuck nodding and smiling politely for like 15 minutes. 15 minutes and they may not end up buying anything.

We have this real old bastard who shuffles into my store in the middle of the night, buys a loaf of bread and a few chocolate bars and just sits on one of the benches by the checkouts until about 6:00/7:00 am (he'll shuffle around the store between then trying to stoke up conversation or otherwise upset members of staff).

It might be sad if he wasn't such a miserable, rude asshole. He swore at me once because I couldn't find the kind of bread he wanted out back (the bread delivery hadn't even showed up yet - but try telling him that - he wanted it at midnight because he had places to be, obviously).

Nobody likes him in the store I work in.

He's been banned before, dunno why he was allowed back.

He was banned recently from a music store a ways down the mall for complaining/throwing a tantrum about one of the male store assistants wearing 'goth' earrings or something - which he didn't approve of.

He's a real rebel without a cause.
