I can understand where he's coming from. Sexual assault really does carry a lot harsher penalties than just-plain-old-regular-assault. Not only that, but the culture against sexaul assault can keep a person shamed for a lifetime. Young people who would probably be the worst affected by coming into contact with the law aren't given the opportunity to solve things through extra-legal matters (that is to say, outside of the courts, not in an illegal manner) as they are with other crimes, such as car theft or assault.

Not explicitly, no, but can you understand why it can be widely interpreted as such?

Two people, a man and a woman, went on stage in front of hundreds of thousands of people to represent a brand. They proceeded to act out a rehearsed scene that included a joke that can easily be interpreted as a rape joke. This shows that either Microsoft/Rare/whathaveyou is extraordinarily incompetent or that they don't care about who might be offended and are okay with rape being a joking matter. Both of those, imo, are pretty big deals.

It's a sign that videogame developers are largely ignorant of the desires of a large part of the market. The internet is taking a much closer look these days at jokes like this. Any decent PR person should've nixed the joke, if only to come up with something less juvenile.

For the last time it wasn't intended as a rape joke. All this is is a communication error, which in my eyes is mostly the fault of the receiver since it was pretty clear in the actual context of the conference that it wasn't intended to be offensive or referencing rape.

They have paid writers. People whose paychecks depend on making sure not to insult multiple cultural issues. The rape joke interpretation is a popular one. It boggles my mind that it got through. Not one Sony employee with any power thought to trim the fat and maybe come up with another piece of trashtalk. It's a thing that Sony's done before. In Europe they had a black woman and a white woman fighting on a billboard in a Black versus White campaign for the new colors of the PSP. I don't think they meant to be offensive. I just find them offensively stupid. Not once do they think, "Hey, let's pass this joke around the office before we publish, get some feedback before we accidentally bait the internet."

You could have at least pretended to have watched the conference, as this was part of Microsoft's, not Sony.

I used to think of Apple computers as fairly simple. Then I used them extensively for classwork. Now I think of them as a cross between Fisher Price My First Computer and a horse leg bone.
