"We don't know the culprit was in Bud's house, though. The gashes on the door don't mean that the culprit entered the house."

"That reminds me.... While I was inspecting the door, I found evidence that those gashes might not be related to the murder at all."

"There were signs of a struggle surrounding the body, doroing. As Isabella said, how could a dead man put up a fight?"

Well it means he was knocked over and not hit. Making blunt objects that could have been used to hit him not important.

Pierce folds his arms.

"But this leaves us with a dilemma. We know now that he fell and hit his head, rather than being struck with an object. But the ground at the riverbank is too soft for that. Furthermore, the signs of a struggle and footprints suggest the murder took place there."

"We're faced with a seemingly unsolvable contradiction."

Pierce's glare becomes more intense.

"Which means at least one of our pieces of evidence must be forged!"

"So what you're saying is that , if the ground was hard enough to cause a concussion, it couldn't have been soft enough to make footprints? Something's wrong here..."

"No.... The muddy riverbank could leave footprints, but it couldn't have been hard enough to cause death from a fall."

"The solution to this contradiction is either a) Bud was murdered somewhere else, making the shovel and signs of a struggle forged evidence, or b) Bud actually was murdered on the riverbank, making Cranston's testimony about the victim falling false."
