In 1856, a Frenchman named Jean Eugene Robert-Houdin, the man from whom Harry Houdini would take his name, averted a rebellion using magic tricks.

I think I recall also reading about magicians during the World Wars. Including one who managed to "move" an entire town so when it got bombed the real thing was just fine.

I'm reading that people enter REM sleep more efficiently when they are regularly sleep-deprived. This means that my constant four-hour nights aren't driving me insane because I'm actually getting all the "good" sleep as soon as I hit the bed, rather than laying there for hours like most people do.

Oh. Huh. No wonder I never dream.

and if I do it's usually really weird but that's for a different topic

While REM sleep is helpful for your mental processes, if you're only getting four hours, the lack of non-REM sleep (or deep sleep) isn't letting you physically recover as much as you need to, unless you're naturally a short sleeper who only needs two short sleep cycles.

Yeah, my body is aching non-stop, I was just trying to figure out why my brain isn't turning in on itself.

The mind's very resilient and will take measures to protect itself. The body however, you're destroying slowly with that. Might be time to return to a normal sleep schedule. Hell I barely lasted two weeks on that nightmarish shift.

Seven months. But I can't just quit this route.

Whatever. I'm young. And hardy. Kind of.

That's what I say whenever I pull an all-nighter or something close

suddenly strep throat

that was actually what happened a few days after my first all-nighter, plus I didn't sleep much the next day either since I had to travel somewhere.

Also I was reading an article from reddit about the discovery of a fungus that can eat plastic and live in an anaerobic environment, i.e. a garbage dump.

I remember that, do you recall what the fungi broke the plastics down to?

It looks like no one's sure right now. Because of the sheer size of the plastic polymers they break down, it's difficult to figure out exactly which organic molecules are actually being eaten and which are being released.

I am going to go out on a limb and say methane and CO2. At least dominantly. All of the needed components are in the hydrocarbon chains in plastics so it would be a fair guess I think.

IMHO, breaking them down like this is not a good solution. Re-using them as raw materials would be better. I'd rather use more energy re-using than to get more raw materials.

Yeah, that was my worry as well. It might serve as a decent temporary solution though, to stop using oil as fuel is a higher priority to safeguard our synthetics production.

I keep telling people that we need to face facts, that oil won't last forever, that we need to start encouraging and making non-fossil-fuels become more dominant.

OH WAIT, I live in Arkansas, where everyone needs gas for their Huntin' Trucks, Pickups, and that they're going to get a Hummer.

I'm trying to Heeelllllp
