I love it when people fav my stuff, but I don't go around asking for them

Yeah, it kinda defeats what little point there is to the fave system.

It is flattering when somebody faves your work though.

No, it's a selfish attention grab. A real artist isn't obsessed with "faves" and "pageviews". No one needs to "measure and compare the popularity" of art. Hell, it's DA so every little bit of fanart is going to get fapped over no matter how good it is.

Popularity should never have an affect on someone's work. Ever.

I hate the fave system. It makes horrible artists think their new original character, an inverted picture of sonic the hedgehog, is better than an actual masterpiece simply because theirs got more faves.

I kind of don't like Faves.

I never know if the person Faved my work because they actually liked it or if they're the person who faves everything they see expecting a Fave in return.

It works the same way postcount does on a lot of forums. The more page views/favs you have, the better you are. Most of the time, ESPECIALLY ON DA, quality doesn't matter, a number on your pages does. Shit isn't right.

I meant an artist can compare the popularity of pieces of their own work.

I get a chance to look into the psychology of some of my watchers when they fave things in my gallery I wouldn't necessarily expect them to - for example I wouldn't expect someone who started watching me for fan art to fave something which has a more graphic design influence, but it does happen.

I get surprised like this quite frequently.

I do agree with this however, no artist should ever be obsessed with faves or pageviews

but I think the popularity of an artist does somewhat effect the work to the extent of "theres alot of people watching me I should try hard on this next pic" or "not many people are watching me so I should try hard on this next pic" which I think would be a proper attitude of going about things.

My whole belief is, if I want to find a good artist, DA isn't the first place I'm going to look.

Why did you say however in the first sentence? You just agreed with me and reiterated what I said.

No, that's not a proper attitude. Yeah, so you draw a couple fanartz and people like them, so you decide to draw more so that people will like you more? That's a horrid view. Watches/pageviews/faves should have NO AFFECT AT ALL on what you do.

Who cares about the amount of watches you have? Most of those are probably people who have no intention of ever looking at your work again and only hit watch because they faved one thing, or because they expect you to watch them in return.

Yeah, you should always try a little harder on the next piece of art.

A lot of people started watching me because of that daisies Daily Deviation I got in the middle of last year (on a funny comic). Now I feel like I have to draw funny comics at least once a month, but... I don't really want to do that any more.

I disagree with this. I've found SO MANY good artists on DA, There are bad ones. But honestly you can find lame things and cool things pretty much everywhere.

So don't do it. Draw whatever the hell you feel like drawing. If you feel obligated to draw funny things constantly just to impress people you will never meet in real life, you will not enjoy it as much. Eventually you will end up drawing whatever the people in the comments tell you to, and everything in your gallery will be dick jokes and memes.
